I wanted to point out that there are photos and a drawing of the finished version that you might like to look at. It really worked out very well. I've replaced two bulbs and recoated the lights twice in four years, as I sit here writing this in 2016. The socket plate is much better, and I've added a ring for height. I also have done a lot of messing about with aluminium cans, and think I have a design that's gonna work well, satisfying a number of design desires. I've made up some little jigs for the drill press, and have learned a few things about cutting bottles.
